Community Partners For Development-Ghana (COMPAD-GH)

As part of the Transboundary Monitoring of Timber Trafficking Project, COMPAD-Gh has been actively engaging with communities around the Dormaa Forest District in the Bono Region. Through a series of community sensitization and engagement programs, the organization aims to raise awareness about the negative impacts of illegal timber logging and trafficking on both the environment and local livelihoods. These sessions also provide a platform for community members to discuss their efforts in combating this issue. Additionally, the importance of sustainable forest practices and sourcing timber legally is emphasized.

To further its mission, COMPAD-Gh partnered with the Area TIDD office for a special radio talk show on Nsoroma FM 92.1 MHz, broadcasted on August 21, 2024. This show was designed to educate listeners about the consequences of illegal logging and trade, as well as how to effectively report such activities.

Experts Mr. Jerry Asare and Mr. David Acquaye (Timber Inspector) led the discussion, covering crucial topics such as:

  • Legal timber documentation
  • Key aspects buyers and consumers should be aware of
  • Where to source legal timber

A joint monitoring team made up of Forestry Commission Ghana (TIDD), Customs Division of GRA and COMPAD-Gh has carried out Sawmill inspections and road patrols in the Bono Region.

The joint exercise has contributed to building a strong collaboration between key stakeholders in curbing the menace of illegal logging and timber trade in Ghana.
